Cliques…nerds…and toads! What do these have in common? They all appear in D.W. Gregory’s The Secret Lives of Toads,of course. Director Fred Yockers and the Friday Harbor Middle School Players present this funny play, set (coincidentally) in a middle school classroom, on Friday through Sunday, March 26-28. The story centers on poor Harvey, facing his first day at a brand new school where things look none too inviting. The cool kids have staked out their territory and there’s no room in their cliques for kids with “different” attitudes. The drama and humor unfolds while a group of “Toads” (played by actors) watch, making comments and getting involved in a surprise ending. Yockers is casting more than two dozen 6th, 7th and 8th graders in this “toadally” fun farce.

The Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp celebrates its ninth year of bringing the best Celtic musicians from around the world together for a week of learning and sharing music. And once again, at the close of camp, the Theatre is fortunate to be able to host a performance on the Whittier stage by the teaching faculty, playing both solo and in improvised ensembles.

For so many years, the dining room was the center of family life. In this richly humorous theatrical tour de force, we meet a group of diverse characters–who through the years have shared a dining room. Set in a typical well-to-do household, The Dining Room is composed of a mosaic of interrelated scenes–some funny, some touching–which create a portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. The six actors will change roles, personalities and ages (without major costume changes) as they portray different characters, from little boys to grandfathers and from teenage girls to Irish housemaids. Some scenes are about the furniture itself and the emotional attachment to it, while other scenes simply flesh out the culture of the WASPS. “I think it has a great message about whether the dining room and family relationships as we know them are relevant to today’s modern life,” said director Merritt Olsen. “It’s also a wonderful challenge for the actors to get to play so many different parts.”
