Austin Lounge Lizards @ the San Juan Community Theatre

September 5, 2009
8:00 pm

For 29 years now, the Austin Lounge Lizards has been successfully mixing satire and parody with folk, country and bluegrass music.

The darlings of activist groups, the band’s song trademarks are highly literate, sharply pointed lyrics that poke fun at politics, love, religion and the culture in general. For example, among the songs on their latest CD, ‘The Drugs I Need,’ are the title song and four others commissioned by Consumers Union and other advocacy groups. Their recording of Irving Berlin’s ‘C-U-B-A’ was featured in Michael Moore’s most recent movie, ‘Sicko.’

The Austin Lounge Lizards grew out of the songwriting relationship between Hank Card and Conrad Deisler, who met when they were history majors at Princeton University and started writing songs together in 1976. The band also features founding member Tom Pittman on banjo and dobro, Darcie Deaville on the fiddle and mandolin and bass player Juliann Banks. The group counts among its influences Frank Zappa, George Jones, Spike Jones, Flatt & Scruggs, Tom Lehrer, and Steve Goodman.

Land Based Wildlife Tour

September 5, 2009
1:00 pmto4:00 pm

Join The Whale Museum for a Land Based Wildlife Tour of San Juan Island. The three-hour trips begin at The Whale Museum where a trained and certified naturalist will escort you via shuttle to the west side of San Juan Island where you will have the opportunity to see killer whales, if present, and learn the benefits of watching wildlife in a non-invasive manner from shore. During the tour, you will learn about the biology, social structure, culture, endangered status, and threats of the Southern Resident killer whales. Other wildlife you may have the potential to view includes porpoises (Dall’s and Harbor), seals, sea lions, humpback whales, minke whales, bald eagles, and various species of seabirds. Stops along the Land-Based Tour may include Lime Kiln Point State Park, historic American Camp, and Cattle Point to explore the world of intertidal invertebrates, tides permitting. .

Reservations are required as seating is limited. Participants should bring cameras and binoculars, as only a limited number of binoculars are available on the tour. Wear sturdy shoes for hiking and bring a light jacket. Water and snacks are included.

Thanks to generous underwriting from NOAA, the land-based tours are free to the public but must be scheduled in advance.
